Perl 6 gives you the big knob - Larry Wall (20 Sep 2002)
Check out this
interview with Larry Wall, the renaissanciest person on the
planet. Larry is a *very* good guy and the creator of Perl. Perl is a
cool programming language. Here are some bits from the interview...
- If God is creating the universe sideways like an author, then the
proper place to look for the effects of that is not at the fuzzy
edges, but at the heart of the story.
- We are expected to be creative. And we are expected to help others
to create.
- Making Perl the best tool for growing programs from small to
large is actually one of the underlying design goals of Perl 6. But
other people will use that to inhabit, or even create, other
ecological niches.
- Perl 6 gives you the big knob.
- I do not manage any large projects, appearances to the contrary
notwithstanding. I haven't an executive bone in my body. All my
managerial skills are delegated. Ask anyone I've delegated to...
- However, those who claim that Perl code cannot be managed by more
than one person are obviously smoking something worse than
crack. They're simply ignoring the many examples of people who have
done just that. But you wouldn't expect to hire random people off the
street to come in and collaborate on writing a novel. You can do it by
hiring a few good novelists who already know how to figure out how to
work together, or at least how to fight with each other productively.
I hope that one of the ecological niches that Perl 6 gets sucked into
is the following - PDA's and other small gadgety devices. :-)
Linux Mandrake 8.1 (19 May 2002)
I am now running Mandrake's distribution 8.1 of Linux. It was easy to install on my old laptop. It correctly detected all the hardware (modem etc.) without me having to do anything. Check out this review from The Register.
Murray likes Mandrake's distribution of GNU/Linux too. The browser (Konqueror) and email client (Kmail) are user friendly and, most importantly, we no longer get wiped out by W32 virus's every week. Look at these screen shots; really good stuff and its free !
